To mark the 50th anniversary of hosting the Summer Olympics, the Olympic Park Munich will organize the so-called European Championships on Aug 11-21, 2022. It will be the largest event to take place at the Olympic Park since the 1972 Summer Olympics. The multi sports European Championships 2022 will welcome athletes from nine different sports: athletics, gymnastics, rowing, cycling, triathlon, sport climbing, canoe sprint, table tennis and beach volleyball.
In late April, Munich’s city council agreed that the European Championships will be expanded to nine sports instead of the original seven. Beach volleyball, canoe sprint, sport climbing and table tennis were recently added, while the LEN European Aquatics Championships and the European Golf Team Championships, which participated in 2018, will not take part in 2022. About 4,400 athletes from across Europe will compete in 158 medal events.
The first European Championships were held in 2018 in Glasgow and Berlin. A television audience of more than 1.4 billion watched this memorable first edition on free-to-air channels via members of the European Broadcasting Union and partners in 44 territories across Europe as well as globally. The 11-day sports event brings together existing individual continental championships into one coordinated event staged every four years. The European Championships have a uniform branding and marketing and an overall country ranking.
