Five years ago, a group of enthusiastic road-biking employees at Thyssenkrupp wondered what would be possible today with a road bike made of steel. This idea gave rise to the steel giant offshoot Steelworks by Thyssenkrupp. The goal was to “bring all the advantages of steel to a road bike frame.” Steelworks by Thyssenkrupp even brought the frame to market. It received good test results from trade magazines and was awarded the „Best of the best” Red Dot Design Award in the Material & Surfaces category in 2019.

Even though the Steelworks by Thyssenkrupp team was able to demonstrate its engineering skills with this modern steel frame project and, according to its own claims, found a clear answer to the question of whether steel can still be used in road bike construction, the decision has now been made to end Steelworks production for unspecified strategic considerations. Sales will be discontinued at the end of March 2021.

Steel and technology giant Thyssenkrupp is currently undergoing a tough transition and the comparatively small Steelworks division with its steel frame construction seems to have fallen victim to this upheaval.
