Active Brands has hired Christophe Merkel to be its chairman and CEO. He is taking over from Espen Krogstad, who is retiring after eight years at the helm, having overseen an expansion of its business from Norway into other parts of Europe and North America. The company now generates just over half of its revenues outside its home market. Founded in 2010, Active Brands owns the Kari Traa, Johaug, Dæhli, Bula, Åsnes and Sweet Protection brands. Merkel is coming off 12 and a half years with Nike, where he was most recently vice president and general manager for EMEA North (France, Benelux, Nordics). He also worked for Nike out of Tokyo, Istanbul and Warsaw. Before that, the French-German manager worked as finance director at L’Oréal and held a variety of finance-related posts at Danone. At Active Brands, he is expected to pursue the company’s international and digital expansion.
