The new manager will oversee Bergzeit’s customer service, corporate IT, quality management, finance and logistics. Zabel will work with the German e-tailer’s other joint managing director, Martin Stolzenberger, who was appointed by the Oberrauch family at the same time as Kasperbauer in October 2018, after working at Bergzeit and then at Salewa.
Zabel has vast experience in the e-commerce business. For the past five years, he has been the chief operating officer at Windeln.de, a German online retailer specializing in baby items, where he was responsible for custom- er service, ERP and logistics. He was the brain behind and the founder of two internet platforms dedicated to real estate and crowdfunding. In addition, Zabel helped restructure Siemens Enterprise Communications’ European sales system during a five-year stint at the group. A civil engineer by profession, Zabel also served as head of operations at Birkenstock, the big Ger- man brand of sandals.
Bergzeit’s former managing director, Markus Kasperbauer, will become managing director of Bags and More in Munich, where he had already worked for several years before joining Bergzeit. Kasperbauer, a veteran with stints at Bittl, Salewa, and Conrad, has experience working in the design labs of firms manufacturing bags and backpacks.
Established in 2012, Bergzeit has grown to become one of the most important outdoor retailers in Germany. A subsidiary of the sports group Georg and Jakob Oberrauch, which also owns the Sportler chain in Italy, Bergzeit increased its turnover to €65 million in 2018. Industry watchers expect the turnover to increase by a further €10 million in 2019.
