Jill Layfield, the chief operating officer for Backcountry.com, will be the company's chief executive effective Feb. 1. Jim Holland, who has been CEO for the last 14 years after co-founding the company, will be executive chairman of the board. John Bresee, the other co-founder, will take on a consulting role for Backcountry.com. The men started the online company with $2,000 and a garage in 1996. Liberty Media bought Backcountry.com in 2007, and it is now part of Liberty Interactive Group. Layfield has been with the company in 2004, joining with experience with such internet businesses as Shutterfly.com and Cisco Systems. She has been COO since last March.
