According to international media reports, Chinese billionaire Jack Ma, founder of Chinese online giant Alibaba, has made his first public appearance since late October 2020. Chinese state media circulated a video in which Ma reportedly addressed 100 teachers in rural areas. In the video, he also announced his intention to do more charity work than ever before. Ma had not appeared in public since he sharply criticized Chinese regulators in a speech last October. After that, there had been much speculation about his sudden disappearance. In early November, Chinese authorities halted the planned IPO of Alibaba’s financial subsidiary Ant Group, citing new rules. This would have been the largest IPO ever. In addition, Alibaba is under investigation by China’s antitrust authority for alleged monopoly violations.
