The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) has welcomed the publication of the EU Work Plan for Sport, which is meant to guide EU cooperation on sport policy for the years 2021 to 2024, and announced that, together with its members, it looks forward to working with the EU institutions and member states to implement the ambitious action plan.
FESI said it particularly welcomes the attention given to strengthening the recovery and crisis resilience of the sporting goods industry during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as promoting health-enhancing physical activity. This, FESI said, is one of the priorities also championed by the Federation to ensure the industry’s speedy recovery from the pandemic. There is an urgent call for action to encourage more people to adopt active lifestyles at home, at work and during leisure time. The Covid-19 crisis can act as a dramatic but powerful accelerant to raise awareness among citizens and decision-makers.
Another key element of the new Work Plan is the recognition of sport’s contribution to Europe’s environmentally sustainable growth as well as to digitalization. The sporting goods industry is strongly committed to the transition to a greener and circular economy and has been working for years to produce innovative and environmentally friendly products. Strengthening this transition through cross-industry collaboration is critical to making green sports a full reality by 2024. Innovation and digitalization in all areas of the sports sector should be useful accelerators for a sustainable transition.
