The Scandinavian Outdoor Group (SOG), comprising 74 Scandinavian outdoor brands, had its Fall Networking Day at the beginning of October. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was held digitally, with a total of 85 participants. Sara Wänseth, who has been the general secretary of the group for six years, informed the Outdoor Industry Compass about the news and learnings from the meeting.

Most importantly, SOG is now climate positive. The group has joined the Climate Neutral Now pledge and has centrally measured its CO2 emissions in 2019, as well as the emissions of Scandinavian Village at the trade shows and one of the Scandinavian Outdoor Academies. Emissions were offset by 150 percent, which benefited a rice husk power plant project in Cambodia. Wänseth said that SOG will continue this practice, trying to reduce its footprint as much as possible.

No less important is one of SOG’s new projects for 2021, called SOG Circular Outdoors. In order to become stronger in this field, the members have agreed to intensify their collaboration, map existing circular initiatives in the Scandinavian outdoor industry, create a platform for the exchange of knowledge and practical experience, and explore common solutions for circular initiatives (e.g. repair and rental services). This is intended to increase consumer awareness and possibly reduce the investment risk for individual brands and facilitate profitability. The circular economy will also be one of the topics of SOG Stronger Together Tuesdays. The new monthly meetings will serve as a platform for exchange and discussion. Other planned topics include remote working and digital transformation.

The SOG will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2021. Wänseth has not yet detailed any planned festivities, but she and her team have already begun preparations. Implementation will certainly depend on the pandemic and the trade show situation in 2021. The award ceremony for the next round of the Scandinavian Outdoor Award is definitely intended to take place during the upcoming Ispo Munich 2021, and nominations are already under way.

The group is planning a number of other external projects, but Wänseth could not reveal any details at this point. We will keep you updated.
