This year’s OutDoor Industry Award competition, the third to be held at OutDoor, attracted a total of 280 entries from 25 different countries. An international jury of experts presented two gold and six silver awards on the first day of the show, honoring exceptional performance in the field of design and innovation. Five entries were also honored in the new “students category;” All of the award-winning products will be on display in an exhibition during the show on the ground floor of Foyer West until July 20.
At the ceremony, Rolf G. Schmid, the president of the European Outdoor Group and chief executive of the Mammut Sports Group, was named as the “OutDoor Celebrity of the Year 2008.”
The winners of the two gold awards were the “Therm-a-Rest NeoAir” air mattress by Cascade Designs of Seattle, Washington and the “Wiglo Tent Concept” by Bergans of Norway. Both were in the category of camping equipment. The NeoAir was described in the first issue of the THE COMPASS. The Wiglo tent is a kind of tipi with a main post in the middle and three additional posts on the sides. This type of structure provides a particularly generous floor area. The three outer tent flaps can be rolled up to create three large entrances. The three poles provide the tent with great stability.
The six silver awards were presented to: Mammut Sports Group (two awards), Grivel Mont Blanc, Bolt Products, Osprey Europe, Black Diamond Equipment. Other winners of the OutDoor Industry Awards 2008 were products from ITW Nexus Global, Odlo International, Petzl, Cascade Designs, Faszinatour, Hydro-Photon, The North Face, Skylotec, Patagonia Europe, SIDAS – Comform’able, Wild Country, Marmot Mountain Europe, Klättermusen, Better Energy Systems, Barigo Barometerfabrik and Wolverine Europe.
