The 21st edition of the OutDoor show in Friedrichshafen went relatively well. The overall atmosphere was upbeat, the business climate was generally positive and the total number of daily visits went up by 2.1 percent to 21,912 as compared to last year, in spite of the uncertain economic climate and the unpredictable weather situation.

Total attendance would have been higher if Germany had not made it to the final match of the football World Cup on Sunday, where it won against Argentina. In fact, more people passed through the turnstiles than a year ago on each of the first three days, but on the last day, the halls were a little emptier than usual as many football fans had already gone home. The Saturday night party at the fair was as vibrant as before in spite of the rain and the match between the Netherlands and Brazil.

The biggest increases in visitors were recorded from the four major Asian markets and manufacturing centers for outdoor products - Taiwan, China, Japan and South Korea - according to the organizers. Attendance was up also from Germany, in spite of the World Cup, and the country continued to take the lion's share with 28.80 percent of all the visitors, followed by Switzerland, Italy, Austria, France, South Korea and the U.K.

The organizers counted more visitors than a year ago from Switzerland, Italy and the U.S. Stable figures were reported from Spain, although the country dropped out of the list of the 15 major countries of origin as a percentage of the total number of visits.

Visitors came from 97 countries, four more than in July 2013. The fair was covered by 1,046 media representatives from 33 countries. It attracted a total of 925 exhibitors, 12 more than last year. They came from 39 countries and included more than 220 newcomers from outside Germany.

A survey conducted at the fair showed that 86 percent of visitors consider it to be important or very important for them, and 84 percent have already decided to come back next year, when the fair will move to a new Wednesday to Saturday schedule. Exhibitors from Italy and other countries said that this should encourage a larger number of small, independent retailers who work hard in their stores on Saturdays to make the trip to Friedrichshafen.
