Vaude, the German outdoor gear brand, has laid out a comprehensive strategy to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2040. The plan, now validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), reinforces Vaude’s longstanding commitment to addressing climate change through measurable action.

To meet its ambitious goals, Vaude aims for a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 and a 90 percent reduction by 2040, using 2019 as the baseline. The remaining 10 percent of emissions, deemed unavoidable, will be offset through nature-based solutions like reforestation and peatland restoration to ensure true climate neutrality.
A significant part of Vaude’s strategy includes shifting its product materials to more sustainable options. Currently, 75 percent of its products are made with at least 50 percent recycled or renewable materials, and the company aims to increase that to 90 percent by 2030. Additionally, Vaude is working on transitioning its supply chain to low-emission energy sources. This initiative is already making headway through the Carbon Reduction Project, which pushes suppliers to switch from coal to renewable energy.
At its headquarters in Tettnang, Germany, Vaude operates entirely on green electricity, setting an example for the outdoor industry. The company’s CEO, Antje von Dewitz, emphasized the need for urgent action, pointing out that the climate crisis demands businesses take the lead in reducing global emissions.
Vaude’s plan positions it ahead of both Germany’s 2045 Net Zero target and the European Union’s 2050 deadline. With this, the company hopes to inspire others in the outdoor industry to commit similar sustainability commitments.
