The Outdoor Industry Association of the USA reports increases of 14 percent in units and 12 percent in dollars for American outdoor retailers during the month of May, as compared to the same month a year ago, reaching a level of $449 million. It was the fifth straight month of overall sales growth. All four major product segments (equipment, equipment accessories, apparel and footwear) enjoyed sales increases in value. Outdoor chain stores and outdoor internet stores recorded the biggest gains during the month, rising by 13 percent and 25 percent in value, respectively. Independent outdoor shops saw their sales advance by 4 percent, with increases of 10 percent for clothing, 5 percent for equipment and 3 percent for accessories. Their footwear sales were down by 4 percent.
