Berg Outdoor informed its distributors and agents at the end of December 2018 that the brand will cease operations in 2019. Orders already taken for spring/summer 2019 will be delivered as planned, but there will be no collection for autumn/winter 2019. The Sonae Group is currently examining alternative strategies for the brand, which was created in 2002 as a private label for the Sport Zone chain of sporting goods stores in Portugal and Spain. Berg Outdoor and Sport Zone both belong to the Portuguese Sonae Group. Since 2015, Berg Outdoor has had its own sales team, based in Porto, to handle the brand's distribution to other sales networks in Europe. In France, Berg Outdoor signed a distribution contract with the Wood Agency, which reported that it had achieved good sell-out for several seasons and sold the brand to more than 75 retailers in France. The collection, which had reasonable prices and was made in Portugal, included both men's and women's apparel for mountaineering and trail running as well as shoes and accessories like bags. In October 2017, Berg Outdoor developed a range of technical mountain sports products to increase sales to specialist retailers around Europe. It is said that Sonae took the decision to cease Berg Outdoor's operations. In 2018, it entered into a joint venture for Sport Zone with JD Sports, which now heads up Sport Zone's operations. Deeply, the Sonae Group's brand of boardsports apparel and casual wear, will still be managed by Sport Zone.
