Peter Metcalf, chief executive of Black Diamond, has resigned from the Utah Ski and Snowboard Industry working group over legislation proposed by Utah's governor, Gary Herbert, that would transfer ownership of public lands from the federal government to the state. He argued that the governor's proposal would be detrimental to the outdoor sector, ignoring its sizeable contributions to the state's economy. Metcalf is wondering how the state of Utah would handle the territory at a time when it is unable to properly fund its own $12 million budget for state parks, while the U.S. Federal Bureau of Land Management spends $150 million a year to manage its lands in Utah.
