Vibram has inaugurated a special store at 292 Newbury Street in Boston to showcase its FiveFingers line of glove-styled shoes. It features “experience zones” to test its shoes on marble, woodchips, grass, stones and the kind of safety strips used in the subway. Some of the models are sold only in Europe. It was normal for the Italian company to open its second store in the U.S., which has become by far the largest market for its FiveFingers shoes. Its only other store is in Milan. Vibram pioneered the new trend for minimalist running shoes, whose total sales by all brands grew by a further 70 percent in the U.S. in the first two months of 2012, according to recent market research.
