According to the 2012 American Camper Report, the leading study tracking participation in camping in the U.S., almost 43 million Americans participated in camping last year, equating to 14.9 percent of Americans over the age of six and 2.6 million more participants against the previous year. The study was released by The Outdoor Foundation and sponsored by Coleman and Kampgrounds of America (KOA), based on an online survey of more than 38,000 Americans. The report shows that 84 percent of campers participated in multiple outdoor activities, with hiking emerging as the most popular activity. The average camper went on 4.97 camping trips per year, while Hispanic Americans recorded a higher-than-average rate of 5.52 camping trips per participant per year. 23 percent of Hispanic campers aged 18 and over tried camping for the first time in 2011.
