Columbia Sportswear gave out $50,000 worth of cash and product to 10 grant recipients of its new Belay Program, launched with the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance. The program and the grant recipients were unveiled at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City this month. The Grassroots Outdoor Alliance and Columbia both want to acknowledge groups that work toward their goal of promoting long-term environmental good for the great outdoors, whether locally, nationally or globally. The Belay Program is named for the process used in climbing to secure and safeguard the climber by using rope. The program is intended to provide the basic necessities to secure and safeguard projects that improve the environment. The winners, ranging from river cleanup programs to climbing programs to oyster planting to youth camps, were among 30 applicants for the inaugural grants.
