The EU has launched a program to support the development of sustainable cotton in Pakistan throughout the supply chain. It will cover the process from farm to final product, including liaisons with retailers and brands, and is funded by the Switch Asia initiative. WWF-Pakistan will fund the project, which is called Spring (Sustainable Cotton Production in Pakistan Ginning SMEs). Cotton ginners in the country will learn of the importance of sustainable cotton production and be put in touch with farmers of better cotton, and will be encouraged to take up more sustainable practices. Various related organizations in Pakistan – such as the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association, Small & Medium Enterprises Development Authority, Pakistan Cotton Standards Association, National Textile University and Cleaner Production Institute – will support efforts to link the industry with leading cotton retailers in the EU.
