According to data from ANCMA (Associazione Nazionale Ciclo Motociclo Accessori), the sector’s trade association, bicycle sales in Italy are expected to increase by 20 percent this year as compared to 2019. The pandemic provided the primary drive for the growth, followed by the mobility bonus that was allocated by the Italian Ministry for the Environment. Sales will exceed 2 million units this year – between 2,100,00 and 2,150,000, according to ANCMA’s estimates – as compared to 1,713,000 in 2019. The additional bikes were sold mainly between June and November, and 30-35,000 of them were e-bikes. Although e-mbts still hold the first place in the category, city and trekking e-bikes experienced a real boom, up to 50 percent of the new purchases.
