Tatonka is incorporating reflectors made by Recco, the Swedish brand of search and rescue gear, into some of its backpacks and outerwear. The backpacks in question are the Skill 30, Kings Peak 45 and Kings Peak 60, all designed for summer or winter use. The Recco system of detectors and reflectors was conceived in the 1970s, after a deadly avalanche in Åre, Sweden. Refinements came in 1980s with the rise of cellular technology for telephones. According to Recco, some 700 ski areas and rescue teams now use the system and some 200 manufacturers of outerwear, ski gear and protective gear have incorporated reflectors into their products. Tatonka is a family-owned outdoor brand based in Bavaria.
