The Conservation Alliance Legacy Fund has reached its goal of a $3.5 million endowment thanks to a pledge from The North Face to give $750,000 over three years. The Legacy Fund's earnings cover the Conservation Alliance's operating expenses. It was launched in January 2008 and grew to $2.75 million when the global recession hit, putting a temporary end to fund-raising. Last August it resumed the effort, announcing a goal of $3.5 million by the end of 2012. The latest contribution from The North Face is in addition to $1 million gave to kick off the fund. The Conservation Alliance was founded in 1989 by The North Face, Patagonia, REI and Kelty, and now counts more than 180 member companies. Last year, it contributed $1.05 million to conservation efforts in the U.S.
