From a revolutionary tent fabric to a global benchmark for performance protection.

In 1976, a small backpacking tent quietly changed the outdoor industry: The Early Winters Light Dimension™ tent was the first consumer product built with GORE-TEX® Product Technology.

It introduced something the market had rarely experienced before at scale: durable waterproof protection that was also breathable enough for sustained outdoor use.

Five decades later, GORE-TEX® Fabrics are used across mountaineering, trail running, skiing, footwear, workwear, firefighting and defense applications. What started as a material innovation has evolved into one of the most recognized ingredient brands in the global sporting goods industry.

However, according to W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore), the founder of the GORE-TEX Brand, the 50-year milestone is not simply about looking back.

“For five decades, GORE‑TEX® Products have enabled people to perform in the toughest conditions,” says Michelle Augustine, Gore fabrics business leader. “We continue to build on this foundation through innovation that helps our partners meet evolving needs while advancing responsible performance for the future.”

That future-focused mindset now shapes the anniversary theme: “50 Years of Going Further, Together.”

A material innovation that reshaped the market

At the center of the story is a lightweight, microporous material discovered by Bob Gore in 1969.

The material enabled GORE-TEX® Products to combine waterproof protection, windproofness and breathability in a way that fundamentally changed outdoor apparel and footwear design. Athletes and consumers no longer had to choose between weather protection and comfort.

The timing was significant. Outdoor sports were becoming more technical, expeditions more ambitious and consumers increasingly interested in functional apparel that could perform in demanding conditions.

The first milestones followed quickly

In 1977, Norwegian outdoor brand Norrøna developed the first jacket prototype using GORE-TEX® Laminate in Europe. A year later, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler used GORE-TEX® Products during their historic oxygen-free ascent of Mount Everest. In 1979, Brooks launched one of the first running shoes featuring GORE-TEX® Product Technology.

Over the following decades, the technology platform continued to evolve. The “GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY” promise, introduced in 1989, became one of the industry’s most recognizable performance commitments. Innovations such as WINDSTOPPER® Products, Soft Shell constructions and GORE-TEX® Invisible Fit Products expanded the application range even further.

At the same time, GORE-TEX® Brand moved beyond pure mountain sports. Designers such as Junya Watanabe brought GORE-TEX® Products to Paris Fashion Week, helping establish technical outerwear as part of fashion culture.

Performance enters a new era

The industry is now entering a different phase: For decades, the focus was primarily on pushing technical performance: lighter products, better weather protection, higher breathability and lower weight. Today, consumers and brands increasingly expect products to combine high performance with sustainability.

For Gore that means “responsible performance” — the belief that performance, durability and sustainability must advance together.

That thinking is now shaping the innovation roadmap for GORE-TEX® Products.

The company continues to advance next-generation material science, including breakthrough technologies such as its expanded polyethylene (ePE) membrane and PYRAD® Fabrics by GORE-TEX LABS®, delivering trusted waterproof, windproof, breathable, and durable performance.

At the same time, Gore continues transitioning manufacturing facilities to 100% renewable electricity and reducing environmental impact through the use of renewable energy, recycled and lower-impact materials, and responsible manufacturing practices.

Why durability matters now

Durability has become a defining conversation in the outdoor industry — shaping how brands approach innovation, sustainability and consumer trust. Products that stay in use longer can help reduce waste, conserve resources and lower environmental impact over time. But durability remains a complex topic without common methods of evaluation.

To address this, Gore is collaborating with more than 45 stakeholders and Mid Sweden University’s Sports and Outdoor Research Centre to help develop a global durability standard for outdoor gear.

The initiative reflects a broader shift in the sporting goods market. Technical innovation is no longer judged only by performance and comfort in extreme conditions, but also by how products perform over years of use.

Built through partnerships

A defining characteristic of the GORE-TEX® Brand has been its long-term collaboration with apparel, footwear and equipment partners.

Unlike vertically integrated consumer brands, GORE-TEX® Products are part of a broad partner ecosystem. The technology only comes to life when integrated into finished products designed for real-world conditions.

50years Gore-Tex Brand

That approach is reflected in the anniversary message “50 Years of Going Further, Together.”

For Gore, “further” means continuing to raise the standard for durable protection while working with partners to develop more responsible product solutions for the future. In an industry crowded with short-lived technologies and seasonal innovation claims, the long-term relevance of GORE-TEX® Products remains unusual.

Now Gore is betting that the same combination of material science, product testing and long-term partnerships can help shape the next era of performance apparel as well. With 50 years of proven innovation, the anniversary is not the end of a story. It is the foundation for what comes next.

To explore the topic further, Gore recently published the white paper “Durability and the Value of Making Things Last”, which brings together perspectives from researchers, designers, retailers, and industry experts on how durability is reshaping the outdoor industry.
