The PanAm Sports General Assembly has approved the addition of sport climbing to the program of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. It will be the first time that the sport will be included in the Pan American Games, the largest multi-sport event for athletes from nations of the Americas that is held every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games. The decision comes on the heels of the addition of sport climbing to the program of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which were postponed until 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Santiago 2023 will serve as a direct qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic climbing competition. The Santiago 2023 Pan-Am Games are scheduled to take place from Oct. 20 to Nov. 5. Chile will host the event for the first time. More than 6,800 athletes are expected to participate.
