Adidas Outdoor has announced that Sonya Baumstein, one of the brand's athletes, will attempt to be the first female to successfully row alone from Japan to San Francisco next spring. Baustein, 29, will row between 14 and 18 hours per day in a carbon boat weighing less than 350 kilograms without a motor or sail, which she designed herself. During the 4-to-6 month expedition, she will be equipped with six Sawyer ocean oars, an electrical system that runs entirely off of Solbian solar panels and lithium batteries, and an electric water maker that produces 30 liters of water per hour. She will also carry dehydrated meals and drink supplements. The closest human beings during her trip will be space station employees, said Adidas. Preliminary training row for the expedition is likely to take place in January, from Tampa, Florida, to Cozumel, Mexico.
