Columbia has launched a high-performance, Bluesign-certified rain jacket made from 100 percent recycled polyester that does not contain perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). Columbia Sportswear said it spent two years developing a “durable waterproof membrane” for the OutDry Extreme Eco Shell which does not need to be treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) coating. The membrane is applied on the outside of the jacket, with a wicking fabric next to the skin. Furthermore, the environmentally-friendly jacket is not dyed, representing water savings of 80 percent as compared to standard dyed fabric, and the shells are made with 100 percent recycled fabrics. It will come on the market next spring.
