Outlast Technologies is launching a new high-performance filling material called Universe, developed for climate comfort as well as moisture management in bedding and apparel products. Outlast's temperature-regulating phase change materials (PCMs), which are based on viscose fiber, make up 30 percent of the compound, and the balance is made up of down. The viscose fibers are thick in order to to guarantee a high loading of PCMs. According to the company, the performance of Universe compared with a standard PCM viscose fiber is four times higher because of the increased airflow. The new down/PCM viscose fiber blend is also said to reduce the material costs of an end product when compared to the use of 100 percent down.
