Treksta, the big manufacturer of outdoor shoes based in South Korea, has developed the first shoes that incorporate retractable crampons in the soles, using a specially engineered mechanism that works with a small dial. The grip spikes are controlled in and out by simply turning a dial at the side. The grip spikes can be used for icy terrain, and they can be retracted into the rubber sole when traction improves. It is possible to adjust the depth of spikes by turning the dial. The shoes look and work like regular hiking shoes. They are fitted with a Gore-Tex membrane system with a protective toe cap, ankle protective pads and breathable mesh.
