The number of Italians who have obtained a rock climbing certificate grew to 13,000 last year, but some 200,000 others practice climbing as amateurs, says Fasi, the Italian sports climbing federation, adding that these numbers are expected to increase this year by 20 and 10 percent, respectively. More than 200 sports clubs organize about 100 competitions throughout the country every year.
