On Dec. 20, the German climate protection platform ClimatePartner YOU went live, allowing private individuals to calculate, reduce and offset their personal carbon footprint. The website is offered in English and German. By calculating their own footprint, users can contribute to achieving the 1.5°C target demanded by the United Nations IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), which calls for global climate neutrality by 2050.

According to Gerrit Mewes, co-founder of ClimatePartner YOU, the platform is different from other CO2 calculators and initiatives on the market through several attributes, including, for example, an individual reduction plan for avoidable CO2 emissions, validated CO2 offsetting through certified climate protection projects, a blog with information and tips on the topic of climate protection for private individuals, and information on political, social and economic changes that are necessary to achieve climate goals.

The average cost of offsetting one’s carbon footprint for a person in Germany, for example, is about €15 per month.
