Migros, the owner of the Swiss SportXX and Outdoor by SportXX stores, is intensifying its efforts on the use and sale of sustainable cotton. Being a member of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the cooperative joins forces with the World Wildlife Fund. For its offer of cotton products, Migros will start to use BCI-approved cotton to an unspecified “certain amount” starting with fall/winter 2012-13. The corresponding products will not be especially highlighted or advertised. Additionally, Migros has announced its involvement in a project in the western Indian Gujarat province in cooperation with one of its suppliers. The project is the training of some 350 smaller cotton farmers on subjects such as better use of soil, water and pesticides, as well as the application of working methods. Altogether, these farmers shall produce BCI-approved cotton for 2.3 million apparel items.
