Zeal Optics of Boulder, Colorado, is launching a line of sunglasses with frames made of a material the company calls ”See Grass,” a blend of grasses (straw, hemp, flax, rice) drawn from agricultural waste and recycled plastic bottles. Pellets of the material are manufactured in a process fueled by biogas and then fused in injection molds. According to Zeal’s director of marketing, Mike Lewis, it took years to work out the production, and every frame has a slightly different composition and look. The See Grass Collection is making its debut with two styles, Aspen and Divide. Both models retail at $169 per pair and have Ellume polarized lenses (themselves made in part of plants).
