Facebook will soon be adding in-app purchases and enterprise message hosting to WhatsApp. Companies will be able to use Facebook Shops – the e-commerce platform that made its debut in May and feeds into all Facebook apps – to sell products through the messaging app. Companies will also be able to store their employees’ WhatsApp text messages on Facebook cloud servers. WhatsApp’s chief operating officer, Matt Idema, said in an interview with Reuters that the shopping tool would be launched this year, with message hosting to follow in 2021. He also said that hosting would be free of charge for enterprise clients, that hosting clients would have to disclose that their conversations were not under WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption for personal use, and that Facebook would not use data stored on its servers under this service for other purposes. Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014, two years after its acquired Instagram.
