As a precaution, Ortovox, the German brand of winter sports gear, is recalling a production batch of 3+, one of the company's avalanche transceivers. During a recent search training session, the product switched automatically and unintentionally from the search mode to the transmission mode after just 120 seconds. In fact, the affected devices did not receive a sensor signal despite motion, and switched without the user's intervention and activated the follow-up avalanche switchover. Due to this malfunction, the affected products must no longer be used without inspection and a software update provided by the manufacturer. The devices in question were delivered to retailers after Oct. 17. Earlier shipments are not affected. At www.ortovox.com, the user can check whether his or her device should be turned in to Ortovox by entering the serial number of the product.
