The Finnish trade publication YouSport reports that according to statistics from the Finnish Fashion and Sports Trade Association, sales of electric bikes in the country increased to about 31,000 units in 2020, up from 9,000 in 2018 and about 16,000 in 2019.

Vellu Taskila of Pyöräliitto (Finnish Cyclists’ Federation) told YouSport: “This year, the popularity of all sorts of bikes is much higher than usual – most likely because of the Corona pandemic. There are still more normal bikes sold than ebikes.” Good sales are also expected for the future, as the Finnish government decided in last fall’s budget debate that employers will be able to deduct the costs of a bicycle provided to staff from the employee’s gross salary or offer all or part of it as a raise in salary from the beginning of 2021. The employee benefits from a tax deduction. Taskila believes these benefits will significantly increase commuting.
