The Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Munich and Upper Bavaria and the Bavarian Environmental Agency awarded the mountain sports retailer Bergzeit for its long-standing holistic environmental commitment that goes far beyond legal obligations. The company based in Otterfing near Munich received the EMAS certification on Sept. 25. EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a joint system of environmental management and environmental auditing. It was developed by the European Union and is considered the most demanding environmental management system for companies. The German EMAS register currently lists 1,100 organizations.

Bergzeit applied for certification in August with a comprehensive environmental statement, which describes an observation and evaluation of all environmental aspects in the company. In the report, the company presented developments regarding internal aspects such as electricity, resources, mobility and nutrition as well as external developments in the areas of information, supply, entertainment and network.

By hiring a sustainability manager in 2017, the multi-channel retailer has already laid the foundation for more sustainability. Now the long-standing path towards sustainable corporate management is being rewarded by the official EMAS certification. Top priority is given to the company’s goal of being an active participant in the positive and sustainable development of the environment, society and the economy. From Oct. 13, sustainability will be given a further stage at Bergzeit: the company will present the goals, measures and results of its strategy with its own sustainability campaign entitled “Bergzeit geht weiter - Für unsere Zukunft in den Bergen” (Bergzeit goes on - For our future in the mountains).
