Columbia Sportswear has launched a pilot of the ReThreads apparel and footwear recycling program, a special initiative designed to simplify post-consumer recycling, in partnership with I:CO. Columbia is installing collection bins at its stores in which customers can drop off their used clothing and shoes for recycling. The pilot was launched on Oct. 21 and the initiative initially involves seven stores in Oregon, Washington, and Minnesota. Other stores are expected to be added as the program gains traction. The customers who bring in items to recycle receive a voucher for 10 percent off a Columbia purchase of $75 or more, with a maximum of one coupon per day. The program is designed to increase consumer awareness of apparel and footwear recycling options while providing an easy and rewarding way to give outdoor products a new life. The products that cannot be reused are recycled into secondary raw materials for products such as insulation, carpet padding, running tracks, stuffing for toys and fiber for new clothing.
