Invista, the company behind ingredient brands such as Cordura and Coolmax, is introducing a new garment fiber under one of its other labels, Lycra. The new spandex material is described as the first bio-derived fiber of its type. Seventy percent of the material (in weight) comes from renewable sources. The innovation is based on dextrose derived from corn. The advantage of the product is the significant reduction of CO2 emissions compared with traditional spandex fibers. The new Lycra is part of Invista's own sustainability program, called Planet Agenda. Manufacturing of commercially relevant quantities is said to be secured for the brands' autumn/winter collections for 2015/16.
