Patagonia announces the launch of the so-called “Higg Index,” an indexing tool created by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. The Higg Index has been developed in partnership with the American Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) and is based on already existing tools such as the “OIA Eco Index” and the “Materials Assessment Tool” developed by Nike. The goal of the index is to better measure the comprehensive environmental and social impacts of products. The index shall enable companies to identify opportunities to improve the long-term sustainability within their supply chain. The Sustainable Apparel Coalition goes back to an initiative by two companies that are not necessarily natural partners, Patagonia and Wal-Mart, the world's largest hypermarket chain.
