Tim Boyle, the chief executive of Columbia Sportswear, plans to donate $1.5 million for the construction of a new homeless shelter in Portland. According to reports in The Oregonian/OregonLive, the 100-bed shelter and service center will be located on a property owned by the City of Portland under and next to the Broadway Bridge. The donation will go to Oregon Harbor of Hope, a non-profit run by real estate developers, which works to help solve the city's homelessness issue. The new shelter will be a place for homeless people to eat, sleep, bathe and do laundry, with additional connections to social and healthcare services. The announcement of the donation comes a few months after Boyle expressed concern, in an opinion piece published in The Oregonian last November, about the safety of Portland's downtown streets.
